A college prospect in football and basketball, Charles chose to pursue the former as a defensive back at UNLV. Charles was selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the 1988 NFL Draft and spent his first few years in the league playing opposite Deion Sanders. From Atlanta he went to Denver where he played in the AFC Championship game before losing to Buffalo. Charles’ next stop was Tampa where he had the privilege to play alongside Martin Mayhew, Hardy Nickerson and John Lynch on a defense coached by Tony Dungy, Herman Edwards and Lovie Smith. While in Tampa, Charles won the NFL’s Ed Block Courage Award for his off the field accomplishments. Charles was happy to finish his career in San Diego where he joined high school friend Junior Seau on the NFL’s top rated defense and was twice voted the Chargers’ Most Inspirational Player. Since retiring from professional football Charles enjoyed coaching on Jim Harbaugh’s staff at USD and doing guest commentary on various radio and television shows. He can most often be found on the sidelines somewhere with his wife Erin, cheering on one of their five children.
